East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah today said that her team has inspected pandals set up for Durga Puja and found that none of them are encroaching on public space.
Kurbah’s response comes after a Khasi pressure group had written a letter to her complaining about encroachment of pandals on public roads.
The DC said that a thorough inspection had been undertaken and that magistrates are working with police to ensure that the puja celebrations go off peacefully.
“Being a secular country we should respect each other and ensure this puja goes off peacefully because after this we will have celebrations like Christmas, Seng Kut Snem and several others, so we need to look at it in a broader perspective,” Kurbah said.
In terms of law and order, she informed that the district administration is reviewing the situation on a day-by-day basis. All puja pandal committees have been advised to install CCTV cameras to help the authorities in case of untoward incidents and to forestall dangers.
