Over 10 quintals of rice supplied from the East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner’s (Supply) for distribution to ration card holders under the public distribution system (PDS) in Pamrakmai village has reportedly gone missing.
A complaint was made to the DC by the vigilance committee of the village after fair price shop (FPS), Iahunlang VO and consumers flagged shortage of rice supplied to them.
Based on the complaint the Deputy Commissioner directed Food & Civil Supplies Sub Inspector EV Pariat for an enquiry yesterday wherein an inspection was conducted in the presence of H. Tyngkan Office Assistant Supply Branch Khliehriat, government wholesaler S. Bareh, FPS dealer and members of the vigilance committee.
During the inspection, 107 bags of rice, which was delivered by the wholesaler to the FPS, were weighed. It was found that there was a shortage of 10 quintals 66 kgs and 155 grams.
The total allotment made was 53.68 quintals but after the enquiry it was discovered that the total weight of the bags was only at 43 quintals 1 kg and 845 grams.
While the enquiry report of the inspection conducted have not mentioned on how and where the 10 quintals of rice went missing it suggested, “Based on the above findings, we may perhaps instruct the wholesaler concerned to deliver the shortage quantity of rice to the FPS Centre at the earliest.”
Pamrakmai village has 16 AAY, 176 PHH and 24 Non-NFSA card holders.
Secretary vigilance committee Wellson RD Siangshai lauded the Deputy Commissioner for ordering an enquiry and said authorities should also take action against government wholesalers and a probe must be instituted to enquire into shortage of rice meant for the poor, which is happening in other villages as well.
