The Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) has expressed shock at the order by the District Transport Officer, East Khasi Hills prohibiting use of motorcycles for app-based bike taxis.
“At a time when unemployment is growing, app-based taxi service has come as a relief for many young people. This order will deprive many of them of livelihood,” TUR said while demanding immediate withdrawal of this order.
“This government which has not been able to create enabling economic policies for employment generation is hell bent on destroying whatever employment opportunities are there,” TUR added.
It also asked the Meghalaya government to rather ensure that drivers of such app-based services have workers rights with companies providing them with provident fund, insurance and certain paid leave allowances.
