With the rising number of deaths from Covid-19 in the State, there has been a shortage of coffins to put the bodies before they are taken to their homes for burial.
According to reports, many families have complained that they had a difficult time trying to find coffins for their loved ones who died in various hospitals in the city as many coffin shops were closed due to the ongoing lockdown imposed by the administration.
Following the intervention by some responsible citizens, the East Khasi Hills district administration has decided to allow coffin makers to open daily from today.
The coffin makers that were allowed to open included Dorema Coffins at Mawkhar, Garden Furniture at Wah Heh near Itshyrwat, Andreas Kharmuti at Pynthorbah (Block-4) near Valley View School, GMK Coffins, and Don Bosco Woodwork at Laitumkhrah.
