All blocks and sub-divisions in Meghalaya will be connected by optical fibre by 2025, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today after a review meeting with the IT Department.
“We had a detailed discussion with the telecom wing of the power grid, where we are moving forward now to lay optical flow lines all the way to all the blocks,” Sangma said. “The roadmap has been laid and, in a phase-wise manner, this project will start.”
The government expects the work to commence sometime in March next year and be complete by June or July 2025.
Government offices, banks, hospitals, etc will be able to utilise the network for enhanced connectivity, which, the CM explained, is vital given the e-governance projects that the government is moving ahead with.
The project has been proposed under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) of the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). Whatever expenses the central government does not bear will be covered by the state government.
