Assam has been continuing work on a transit camp being built on Meghalaya land, to the fury of the opposition Congress MLA for Nongpoh, Mayralborn Syiem.
The legislator today urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to intervene and stop the construction work in Ri-Bhoi district.
Although political parties, pressure groups and others had raised the issue of encroachment with the state government months ago, Sangma’s administration was reluctant to discuss the issue with its counterparts in Dispur until after Assam’s state elections, the results of which were announced in early May.
“The site of the transit camp is not in dispute between Assam and Meghalaya, so how dare the Assam government encroach on it?” Syiem told reporters. “It seems as if the Meghalaya government is not serious on the issue.”
The Congress has written many times to the state government to try and get the construction work stopped but to no avail.
