The National People’s Party’s youth wing conferred four awards in recognition of service to society in Jowai today on the 158th death anniversary of resistance hero Kiang Nangbah.
The purpose of these awards was to give due recognition and support to those whose call to serve society is inspirational.
The function was attended by Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat, Jowai North MDC Bright Star Chyrmang, nominated MDC Octomewot Lamin and NPYF Working President Nickey Nongkhlaw.
In the socio-cultural category, the award went to the Kiang Nangbah Iasiat Khnam Memorial Society, while Wanhi-i Challam won the fine arts category gong.
There were two awardees in the sports and youth affairs category – martial arts practitioner Hame Shaniah Suiam and futsal official Dauniwanchwa Phawa.
By honouring the four achievers with these awards, the NPP youth wing’s intention is to encourage the awardees to be better “social catalysts” in their respective areas.
Shiwat noted that Kiang Nangbah was only captured by the British after he was betrayed by one of his own people and he urged the attendees to shun malice and jealousy and instead help each other to grow.
Suiam said that in a time where people tend to forget the hard work and contribution of the few, he is honoured and encouraged to be given this award.
