Is NPP, UDP and BJP on the way to stitch a post-poll alliance to form the new government in Meghalaya?
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who is the BJP’s strategist for Meghalaya has clearly hinted this.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today, Sarma said that there will be status quo in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.
“There will be no hung Assembly. The NDA will form governments in all the three states,” Sarma said.
He said there will be a BJP-led government in Tripura and the BJP will be in the ruling coalition in both Meghalaya and Nagaland as it is today.
Sarma also said that in Meghalaya, the chief minister will be decided after considering the number of seats won by the BJP.
Sarma is the convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a forum of BJP and its regional allies in the North East.
NPP and UDP are members of the NEDA. The two parties along with BJP were part of the MDA government in Meghalaya since 2018.
Although the three parties contested the 2023 Assembly elections separately, the likelihood of a hung Assembly may bring them back in one fold to form the government once again.
Elections were held in Tripura on February 16. In Nagaland and Meghalaya, the polls were held on February 27. The results will be declared on March 2.
Several exit polls have predicted that the NPP is likely to become the single largest party and may secure 17-26 seats. The pollsters also predicted that UDP may get 8-12 seats and BJP 3-8 seats.’
