The National People’s Party (NPP) support for Draupadi Murmu as the next President of India has more to do with her tribal identity and less because of is the candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), of which the NPP is a member.
This was stated by NPP working president and Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha MP WR Kharlukhi recently. Murmu is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which leads the NDA.
Kharlukhi said that her candidature demonstrates that, after 75 years of independence, tribals are equal to anyone else in the country.
“We can proudly say that after 75 years we got a chance to have a President of India from one of our tribes,” Kharlukhi added.
Meanwhile, regarding preparations for the 2023 state election, Kharlukhi said that the NPP is hoping for an absolute majority. He also said that five sitting MLAs will join the party before the polls.
