Former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong has justified of not being anti-party but the United Democratic Party (UDP) has deviated from its principle.
Lanong, one of the longest serving members of the party was left embittered when the UDP chose Lambor Malngiang to contest the assembly elections this year. Both lost the Nongkrem seat.
“I have said before that I’m not the one who was being anti-party but it is them who went against the party leader. I am a party leader and they denied me the party ticket,” he told Highland Post on Thursday.
Stating that he would not have mind had the ticket been allotted to someone who is a UDP, he said, “The UDP had no candidate to contest in Nongkrem constituency in 2018 and this was the reason I had wanted to contest from Nongkrem this election, but the ticket went to a total outsider.”
Asked if the UDP had contemplated any action for running against the party candidate, Lanong said that the party has no justification to summon him.
“I did no wrong but they (UDP) broke the principle. And if they do I will raise the injustice they did,” he said.
Lanong who recalled his work from 1997 and the sacrifices he made to carry the party to the present heights appears to have lost enthusiasm to contest the district council elections.
“I’m not sure and it remains to be seen. I cannot say anything right now whether I will contest the MDC election or not in 2024,” he said.
Currently Lanong is a nominated member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
