The 22nd North East Regional Power Committee (NERPC) meeting was held today in Guwahati under the aegis of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO).
This meeting was held to discuss various issues relating to the power sector in the region. Power Ministers from the North East states and top management of power utilities took part.
The central government’s North East Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), expansion of transmission networks, expansion of reliable communication, development of hydroelectric plants, etc. were discussed at the meeting.
The member states were urged to utilize the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the Centre to strengthen the distribution network and capacity building of distribution companies and Power Departments.
NERPC convener and member secretary B Lyngkhoi stated that the North East is blessed with huge hydro potential which needs to be harnessed. High scale upgradation in the transmission networks is necessary to harness hydro power in the region, he added.
Technical issues were initially taken up in the Technical Coordination Committee (TCC) meeting on March 26.
The recommendations of the TCC have been referred to the NERPC forum for final approval.
Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Power Minister Prestone Tynsong attended the meeting and highlighted various plans that the state has in mind to avoid shortage of power in Meghalaya
