A rally to condemn the killing of an ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew in Nongstoiñ was a peaceful one as speakers at the meeting called upon people to shun the path of violence in securing justice.
Organised by the group, ‘Ka Sur Ki Nong West’, that comprises of elders, youth organisations and others the peace rally started from Upper New Nongstoiñ after which elders addressed the public from the market complex.
Reverend Bringstarwell Thongni referred to violence in the state capital and said, “We have seen how properties are destroyed and burnt. We are a god fearing community, and I would appeal the youth and the people to shun the path of violence, because we can bring about healing only through peace by not copying what is illegal.”
Other speakers at the rally also condemned police action on August 13 that killed Thangkhiew and said that justice should be met. They said that the State government should not end in constituting committees without results.
A.K Kharsyntiew said such an act carried out by the police, whom the people rely on, was unacceptable which can be compared to illegal activities.
“The people of Nongstoiñ and entire West Khasi Hills, wants the government to take the responsibility for all that happened t\and give a justifiable judgment on the killing of Thangkhiew,” she said.
Hamar Lyngkhoi said that it’s high time that the 36 MLAs from Khasi-Jaiñtia come together and see that the Hynñiewtrep people are safe and protected.
Arful Kharbani said that the state government should bifurcate joint cadre of service officers between Meghalaya and Assam and alleged that Thangkhiew died in the hands of police, not from the State.
He also demanded that the police from Khliehriat and Shillong, responsible for Thangkhiew’s death should be immediately terminated and stated that if the government fails to do so it shows that it supports such illicit activities and the public don’t need such a government.
