The Dorbar Shnong of Umshangling has been forced to shut down the village dumping ground in Nongpoh immediately due to the overwhelming stench caused by indiscriminate waste disposal.
The foul smell became so severe that it reached nearby homes, making life unbearable for residents who were forced to eat meals amidst swarms of flies without protection.
The Umshangling village council sealed off the dumping ground completely for three consecutive days, leaving surrounding villages and markets in Nongpoh town without a designated area for waste disposal.
The village council barred further dumping at the Umshangling waste site after a site inspection led by Synjuk Chairman Stephan Kshiar, Umshangling Village Headman Mr. James Maiong, and Village Secretary Mr. Vincent Sohkhwai.
The inspection confirmed improper waste disposal, resulting in a pervasive stench and fly infestation, raising concerns about public health, hygiene, food, and water safety.
The headmen body and the Umshangling village council jointly decided to keep the dumping ground closed until the government provides a satisfactory solution.
This closure significantly impacts waste management in Nongpoh town, affecting residential areas, major institutions like Bethany Hospital and Civil Hospital, and large commercial establishments, which now lack a place to dispose of their waste.
