The sixth annual assembly of the Nongkhlaw clan was held today at Umphyrnai village which was attended by hundreds of clan members
Delegates of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur: Ka Bri u Hynñiewtrep including its president, RL Kharpran, Spokesperson Erwin K Syiem Sutnga and Organising Secretary, Raphael Warjri who spoke at the meeting dwelt on the need to preserve matrilineal practice and to safeguard from any outside influence of patriarchal system.
One of the significant deliberations was on the demand of a vast stretch of prime land in Shillong city, which includes the Meghalaya Secretariat Hills, Raj Bhavan and several plots of important government office locations.
Sutnga and Iaineh Nongkhlaw presented detailed accounts of the legal procedures backed with documents on the discrimination of the Nongkhlaw clan over the rights over the said properties across Shillong city and suburbs.
Warjri stressed on the essence and foundation of Khasi matrilineal clan lineage while Kharpran delved on the contemporary situation prevailing in the society where illegal indulgence is being perpetrated by the communities other than the original Khasi community.
