Opposition Congress Party MLAs in Assam were, while on a trip to contentious Langpih, loud and clear in their hostility to giving any land to Meghalaya as part of the ongoing border negotiations.
On Saturday afternoon, a delegation of MLAs, comprising ministers and opposition legislators, accompanied by police officers, civil servants and the media, visited Langpih, which is one of the areas of difference that are being discussed between Meghalaya and Assam in an effort to resolve their long pending border dispute.
The Assam delegation came in a large convoy of 22 vehicles and were escorted by Assam police, Central Reserve Police Force, forest and electricity officials.
They visited areas under Langpih, such as Mawsikar and Mokebari villages. Local MLA Nandita Das and leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia, both of the opposition Congress Party, then gave a press briefing.
A public meeting was also held wherein around 200 people from the Nepali, Garo and Khasi communities from Langpih gathered.
Saikia, Das and others from the Congress spoke at the meeting and were adamant about “not giving an inch of Assam soil to Meghalaya”.
