The State government has ordered halt to the movement of trucks carrying load beyond 20 tons from December 13.
Informing this today, Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said that the order was imposed after public complaints about traffic jam in Shillong city due to movement of overloaded trucks.
It may be noted that trucks were diverted through the city after the Dwar Ksuid bridge on Shillong By-Pass near Umroi was closed for traffic by loaded trucks following cracks that developed in the bridge.
Dhar also said that the restriction on the load capacity was imposed in order to ensure the safety of Umiam dam.
“Trucks found carrying load beyond 20 tons will be penalised from December 13 onwards,” Dhar said.
The minister also said that traffic jam caused by movement of overloaded trucks had caused a lot of inconvenience to residents and commuters in the city.
“With the festive season around the corner, we don’t want anybody to be affected by traffic jam in the city,” Dhar added.
