Shillong, Nov 27: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed strong discontent over what it described as the state Law Department’s inaction against the Vice-Chancellor of the National Law University (NLU) Meghalaya, specifically regarding expenses incurred that the pressure group believes are proof of corruption and misadministration.
A delegation of the KSU took its concerns to Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui today, showing him Right to Information (RTI) findings that it acquired six months ago.
The union pointed out several allegations, including Rs 15,10,347 spent on non-official visits, Rs 3,56,750 on alcoholic beverages during a Delhi event, unscrutinised leave on full salary, Rs 46,83,500 in salaries and Rs 8,26,301 in expenses for professors who did not teach.
The KSU also alleged that there was favouritism involved in appointments within NLU Meghalaya that bypassed the state’s job reservation policy, including tailoring the eligibility criteria for assistant professor recruitment so as to exclude indigenous candidates.
In June, the KSU claimed that NLU Meghalaya was insisting on excessive qualifications for assistant professors, namely that they have cleared Academic level 11, whereas assistant professors are typically expected to have cleared Academic level 10. Level 11 is achieved via promotion after completion of four or more years of service and having a PhD and other attributes and NLU Meghalaya’s insistence on this for its assistant professors was Dube’s way, the KSU alleged, of excluding local candidates.
The KSU criticised the state government for promoting “corrupt practices” by not acting on these findings and it urged the authorities to remove Dube before his term ends in February 2026, citing the NLU Act’s three-year limit for the first VC.
