Shillong, Sep 17: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Upper Shillong Circle met with the General Manager of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) to demand that the companies constructing the four lane road from Umshyrpi expedite their work to minimise traffic disruptions.
The FKJGP led by President Kitboklang Nongphlang, also requested immediate repair of the stretches in areas such as Lad Lummawbah, Sawmer near Sunny Side, Mawklot Lum Shyllong, 7 Mile near Elephant Falls, Pomlum near PHC, and Bañiun on the way to Mylliem that has worn out during the course of the construction of the road.
The General Manager of NHIDCL assured that they would try to complete the work in the Upper Shillong area by December 2025 or January 2026. He promised to instruct the companies and contractors to take necessary actions and conduct inspections with union leaders to facilitate the movement of people.
The FKJGP emphasised the urgency of the situation, as the traffic congestion could impact students preparing for upcoming examinations.
People taking the route to travel to the city daily are having a harrowing time due to the severe traffic congestion caused by the construction of the four lane road.
The work on the road has considerably increased travel time especially on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Additionally, the FKJGP demanded that the NHIDCL direct companies and contractors to ensure that workers from outside the state provide proper documents, given concerns about potential illegal immigrants from Assam.
The federation also urged the Dorbar Shnongs to be vigilant and cooperate in curbing crimes, including theft and drug-related issues in the area.
