Shillong, Mar 26: Six NGOs of Pedaldoba has filed a complaint with the deputy commissioners of West and North Garo Hills districts against a students’ union for alleged extortion along the Rongsai Borjhora Bajengdoba road near the Meghalaya-Assam border.
According to the NGOs, the Baida Anchalik Rabha Students’ Union is orchestrating nightly extortion demands targeting local areca nut vendors at the Borjhora and Rongsai junctions.
“Credible intelligence reveals that this organization conducts nightly extortion, coercing areca nut vendors to pay Rs-100 per pickup. Multiple vendors have emerged with irrefutable evidence of these illicit collections,” the NGOs stated.
The organisations, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Pedaldoba All NGOs Joint Action Committee, Garo State Movement Committee, Constitutional Rights Forum Pedaldoba regional unit, Federation of A·chik Freedom and Achik Youth Welfare Organisation, has urged the district heads to initiate an immediate investigation, dismantle unlawful extortion networks, and impose stringent legal sanctions on all perpetrators in accordance with the law.
