Various NGOs of the Dainadubi region in North Garo Hills filed an FIR yesterday at the local police outpost after they apprehended a vehicle carrying illegal timber allegedly from forest areas around the village.
Further the organisations have written to the District Forest Officer of East Garo Hills, under which the area falls, seeking more vigilance from the Forest Department in stopping the illegal acts.
The NGOs had stopped the vehicle (AS 18 9236) yesterday at around 10:30am as it was coming from the Gairon Forest Reserve. When the truck was stopped, the driver and helper in the vehicle fled the scene after which the truck was handed over to the Nameram Forest Beat Office.
The NGOs also mentioned the Chima Bangsi Reserve Forest that is under the threat of being overrun due to illegal acts of unscrupulous individuals and sought strict action to be taken against those responsible.
