Employees under the aegis of the Non Gazetted Employees’ Association (NGEA) began their three-day hunger strike on the premises of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today morning.
The three-day strike will begin each day from 10 am and continue up to 5 pm.
The latest in a series of agitations over their pending salaries began today after no assurances were given by the GHADC or the state government to ensure payment of their 30 months-plus pending dues. The employees have been protesting since February 22 and have ceased work since then.
“As there has been no written assurance given by the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, over the issue of our pending salaries, we will continue this protest through a hunger strike. We have tried through various ways to get what is rightly due to us without any success. These include non-cooperation, wearing black badges, etc,” said NGEA Secretary, Brithen Sangma.
