The upcoming election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is already set to become an interesting playground with the newly-launched Bharatiya Party Loktantrik (BPL) confirming that it will put up at least one candidate.
Confirming the development, Tengsrang Sangma, the newly-appointed general secretary, said that the party launched its Garo Hills chapter yesterday.
“The two popular parties in the region (Congress and the National People’s Party) have failed miserably in working for betterment of the GHADC, the people of Garo Hills as well as the staff of the GHADC. In fact, the Executive Committee that was at the helm of affairs until the GHADC was handed over to the Administrator recently has failed to pay the staff their salary for more than 30 months. Further their EC has gobbled up Rs 100.71 crore in central assistance without doing anything for the betterment of Garo Hills,” Sangma said through a release today.
Sangma felt it was important for the people of Garo Hills to look at a third option due to the only regional party, the United Democratic Party, losing its significance in Garo Hills.
“Due to this, it became necessary to form a new party and give the people the right to choose. Our meeting unanimously chose Lindin Ch Momin as the President and me as General Secretary. We will be contesting certain seats of the ensuing election to the GHADC with a view to form a corruption-free EC and revamp and restructure the GHADC,” said Sangma on the way forward for the party.
