Even as East Jaintia Hills is rich in natural beauty, its tourism potential is yet to be realised.
The beautiful waterfalls have remained oblivious to outsiders as for many years the district has always been popular with the coal mines, which has turned its beauty into a dessert.
Things have changed over the years and this time around an organisation has chalked out plans to attract tourists to the district by unveiling a waterfall named, ‘Blo’.
The Thwai Syiem Society in Sutnga village and the Narwan dorbar shnong on Saturday revealed about the existence of the Blo Waterfalls located adjacent to the famous Khasi Mandarin Farm in Narwan village.
Secretary of the Narwan dorbar shnong Leo Shadap said the waterfall is located on the Syrbang River and was named after a cow herder Blo Langstang, who likes to go and bathe there.
Shadap said the Covid 19 pandemic had led to a strong media focus on nature and how people go outdoors to discover new attractions. He said to get some inspiration they decided to unveil the waterfalls, just about 2.5 kms from the Narwan road.
He congratulated the Thwai Syiem Society for collaborating with the dorbar shnong to develop the waterfall into a major tourist attraction.
Project engineer of the State Sport Council Phrangki Pale who attended the unveiling function as the chief guest lauded the efforts put in by the farmers of Narwan under the leadership of award winning agripreneur Self Denial Lyngdoh, who is also the chairman of the society.
He lauded Lyngdoh for setting up the Khasi Mandarin farm by turning a coal mining site into a 125 acre green forest. Pale said the farm and the waterfalls will attract visitors and wished the society the best.
Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council deputy secretary Boimi Mulieh, villagers, students and others were also present on the occasion.
