The new Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) team will bring an end to infighting within the party, newly-appointed working president Ampareen Lyngdoh said today.
The state Congress Party has developed, over the years, a reputation, whether deserved or not, that infighting is endemic.
“The four of us who have been appointed will concentrate on reversing the trend of infighting, which has been rotting the party from inside,” Lyngdoh said.
Yesterday, the All India Congress Committee appointed Shillong MP Vincent Pala as the new MPCC president, with Ampareen, Marthon Sangma and James Lyngdoh as working presidents.
It may be mentioned that on Wednesday, the AICC appointed Lok Sabha MP from the Shillong, Vincent H. Pala as the new MPCC president, besides appointing Lyngdoh, Martho Sangma MLA and James Lyngdoh as the working presidents.
The East Shillong MLA opined that the new top team is representative of the party and state and will help the Congress prepare for the 2023 Assembly elections when it will aim to return to power.
According to her, Meghalaya is in a mess, politically speaking, under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government and the opposition has to listen to the voices of the people from all corners of the state and not just decide on how to contest elections from the comfort of Shillong.
When asked specifically about her admission of infighting within the party (up to this point denied as a matter of course), Lyngdoh said that most disagreements tend to revolve around the allocation of party tickets during elections.
“These issues crop up because our party has many personalities,” she added.
Pala will arrive in the state capital on Friday, following which a meeting of the MPCC will be held. A top priority of the new leaders is to form election campaign committees at the district-level.
The Congress MLA said that the party needs to identify and groom the right people, all the while getting the pulse of the electorate, if it is to exit opposition and take the helm once again.
