A new nursing college was inaugurated in Umtrew, Ri-Bhoi, today with the aim to give aspiring nurses from the district and the wider region a new option in gaining the training they require.
The St Joseph’s Academy of Nursing was opened by the Catholic Archbishop of Shillong Victor Lyngdoh in the presence of former Health Minister AL Hek, who is the advisor of the new institute.
“It will be immensely beneficial not only for the people of Ri-Bhoi or the state but also for the entire North East as students can come and study nursing here,” said Hek.
The academy will accommodate a total of 120 students, split evenly between general nursing and midwifery (GNM) and BSc nursing. However, the latter course has yet to receive accreditation with North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), while the GNM course is affiliated with the Directorate of Health Services and Meghalaya Nursing Council.
