The North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE)-NCERT, Umiam yesterday observed the International Matribhasha Diwas (Mother Language Day).
The progamme was held with an aim to promote awareness of linguistic diversity and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.
NERIE coordinator, Dr. Melissa G. Wallang said, “Language is something that makes us human, that is why we are superior than animals and it is the ability for us to understand, to discover and uncover many things in this world”.
She said language gives people the sense of identity that helps them to understand human emotions and acquire world knowledge.
A talk on “Celebrating the Ethnolinguistic Diversity of the North East Region” and “Protection of Linguistic and Cultural Knowledge” was also organised on the ocassin.
An art and painting exhibition that highlights the language and culture of the Northeast, music completion and a play entitled, “Hearts that Beat the same Drums” was performed by the students of the institute.
