The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) of the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) performed the Bo-Yang Y-Incision Aortic Annular Enlargement Surgery.
Considered to be the first in East India, the procedure was developed in 2021 by Prof. Bo Yang from the University of Michigan Health, to address challenges in aortic valve replacement, especially for patients with severe aortic valve disease.
“Recent research has shown that traditional aortic valve replacements are often undersized by 5-7 mm, reducing the valve opening by up to 40- 60% accelerating wear and deterioration. This procedure allows for aortic root expansion, enabling the implantation of a 3-5 sizes larger valve improving blood flow, valve durability, and patient survival outcomes,” a statement from NEIGRIHMS said.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Reuben L. Kynta, Associate Professor of CTVS, assisted by Dr. Tabang Nyitan and Dr. Neelmajingbha Sun (Assistant Professors of CTVS) and Dr. Priyanka Dev (Associate Professor, Anesthesiology).
Extracorporeal Perfusion support was provided by Perfusionists Mrinal Mandal and Loosar Dkhar, alongside the skilled CTVS-OT and CTVS-ICU staff.
NEIGRIHMS Director, Prof. Nalin Mehta lauded the achievement as this technique gives the patient an artificial valve with an inner diameter of the opening of the cusps similar to or larger than the native ring, avoiding under sizing that occurs when relying on the inner diameter of the metal frame reported by valve companies.
He emphasized that this accomplishment reinforces NEIGRIHMS’ commitment to advancing cardiac surgical care in the region.
