The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recognised the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) as a regional centre for Medical Education Technologies (MET).
With the recognition, the institute through the centre would be able to train faculty members of medical colleges in the Northeast and Eastern region to be allotted by the NMC.
“The faith reposed in NEIGRIHMS by the NMC is a feather in the cap not only for the institute but for the people of Meghalaya and the entire Northeast, which it serves,” a NEIGRIHMS statement here today said.
Under the stewardship of Director, Nalin Mehta, a renowned medical teacher and an expert in medical education technologies, NEIGRIHMS said, it is committed to achieving the NMC mandate of producing highly competent Indian medical graduates in the region.
Meanwhile, President of the Under Graduate Medical Education Board of the NMC, Dr Aruna Vanikar will inaugurate the regional centre on July 11.
A book titled, ‘English-Khasi Translation in Medical Practice with Khasi-Hindi Transliteration and Phonetics’ published by the Department of Medical Education, NEIGRIHMS will be released on the occasion.
The book with technical and literary contributions from the NEIGRIHMS faculty is an English-Khasi translation of commonly used terms in the health-care sector.
The institute said it is intended to empower students and health care professionals to communicate effectively with patients.
“Since a vast majority of the patients visiting NEIGRIHMS converse in Khasi and the medical courses offered attract students from all over the country, this book is expected to be of immense help to non-Khasi speaking students and health-care professionals in delivering the best possible care,” NEIGRIHMS said.
