Shillong, Apr 8: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has written to Prof Sumarbin Umdor, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) of NEHU’s Shillong campus, highlighting two serious issues concerning the university.
NEHUTA expressed concern over the appointment of Prof Brinda Bazeley Kharbirymbai as part-time Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) without Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) approval.
According to CVC guidelines, a panel of three eligible officials should be recommended by the university and approved by the CVC before appointment. NEHUTA alleges that this procedure was bypassed, constituting a clear violation of prescribed norms.
The association has also raised concerns about the unauthorised absence of Prof KC Biswal from his duties at the Department of Management on the Tura campus. Despite the semester starting in February, Biswal has not taken any assigned classes or guided students, hampering teaching and learning activities. The Head of Department has written to Biswal, citing complaints from students, and NEHUTA is urging Umdor (who holds charge of NEHU as the senior-most faculty) to initiate disciplinary action against him for dereliction of duties.
