Shillong, Nov 9: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has strongly opposed the decision to hold the 193rd meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of NEHU in Delhi on November 14, 2025, citing austerity measures and the absence of Vice-Chancellor Prof PS Shukla.
In a letter to Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NEHUTA stated that Shukla has been absent from his duties at NEHU headquarters in Shillong for 354 days, “following widespread protests against his mismanagement, nepotism and narcissistic behaviour.”
The association claimed that the Union Ministry of Education had agreed to resolve NEHU’s crisis, and Shukla had agreed to fade away from NEHU and not interfere in university affairs. However, he is now attempting to chair the EC meeting in Delhi, violating the agreement.
NEHUTA argued that holding the meeting outside the university campus defeats the purpose of austerity measures and is a wasteful expenditure, especially when there are cuts in academic and infrastructural activities due to lack of funds.
The association cited a ministry letter dated August 20, 2024, which states that all official meetings, including EC meetings, should be held within the university campus to ensure transparency, accessibility and operational efficiency.
NEHUTA has urged the NEHU administration to adhere to the ministry’s directive and not allow Shukla to interfere in university affairs. The association will continue to work in the interests of teachers, its members and the university.
Meanwhile, NEHUTA also urged EC members to abstain from attending the meeting in New Delhi.
