The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) today asked the university’s two new Pro Vice-Chancellors, Prof Sherwin M Sungoh and Prof Fameline K Marak of Shillong and Tura campuses respectively, to resign from their posts immediately.
Stating that the posts of Pro VCs held by the two are illegitimate, the teachers’ association will decide its next course of action.
NEHUTA also stated that guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Education do not permit a person to hold a statutory post three months before retirement and Sungoh is set to retire on May 31, 2025.
“The same guidelines were used by the university with Prof Saha as the Acting VC as recently as January 2025 for a similarly placed case,” NEHUTA stated.
Meanwhile, NEHUTA president Prof Lakhon Kma has hit out at Sungoh, stating that her joining as Pro VC is tantamount to a stab in the back against students, teachers and non-teaching staff.
According to Kma, the students, teachers and non-teaching staff have been fighting to ensure that Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla is forced out of his position but the act of Sungoh has spoiled their cause.
