North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) organised a two-day international workshop on ‘Mathematical Foundation and Applications of Gravity’, which concluded here today.
It was organised by the Department of Basic Science and Social Sciences (BSSS) with support from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and sponsored by the Science Engineering Research Board.
More than 270 participants registered for the workshop, coming from India and the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Estonia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Greece. It was inaugurated yesterday by NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof PS Shukla.
The main objective of the workshop was to highlight the connection between mathematics and physics, which has immense applications in modern times, and promote interdisciplinary research according to the vision of the National Education Policy 2020.
Shukla stressed upon students the need to learn new skills in mathematical sciences as it is an integral part of our daily lives. Cross collaborations among different disciplines and learning in an enhanced environment were also encouraged.
The convenor, Jibitesh Dutta of the BSSS Department, emphasised the need for such workshops on a regular basis to motivate young minds to explore space science and foster a research culture in society. He also hoped that the workshop will provide new research directions and lay the foundations for a bridge between different areas of mathematics and theoretical physics.
