Cabinet minister Alexander L. Hek today sought the intervention of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the ongoing NEHU imbroglio.
In a letter to the Union minister, Hek also enclosed the letter of the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA) of NEHU expressing their resentment at the attitude of the NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.
“I shall be deeply indebted if you kindly look into the matter with reference to the grievances expressed by the teachers’ body for the smooth functioning of the university and to avoid the loss of the educational aspiration of the students studying in the university. Your intervention on the matter will be much appreciated,” Hek said in the letter to Pradhan.
Meanwhile, Federation of Central Universities of Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA) vice president Prof. Xavier P. Mao today said that NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla can be removed procedurally but there has to be a “visitorial inquiry against his omissions and commissions.”
According to Mao, visitorial enquiry means the President of India, who is the appointing authority of a vice chancellor in a central university, forms an enquiry committee.
“If the enquiry committee outcome is adversely against the vice chancellor, then the President of India who is the Visitor of NEHU can remove him,” Prof. Mao said.
Prof. Mao also said that the vice chancellor can also step down from his post on moral ground.
