Stakeholders in North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have urged all to refrain from attending the meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of the University scheduled in Delhi on May 30.
The stakeholders consist of North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) and North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union.
According to them, the EC meeting convened by Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla is “illegitimate” since he went on earned leave and had sought extension till March 2, 2025. Till date he has not joined/reported to the NEHU Headquarter in Shillong after his leave was over, which amounts to continuous absence from duty, the associations added.
The associations/unions made it clear that any member who chooses to proceed against their appeal will be regarded as acting in opposition to the interests of the students, teachers and non-teaching staff and the university as a whole.
The associations also noted that the Inquiry Committee Report on the conduct of Shukla has not been made public by the Ministry of Education. They said that Shukla has made statements that undermine the discussions and agreements that the stakeholders of NEHU had with the members of the visiting team of the Ministry of Education, on May 22 which could have resulted in normalising the situation in the university.
Moreover, they stated that Shukla has again attempted to disrespect more than 135 members of the Academic Council who attended the meeting held on May 21 chaired by Prof. S. M. Sungoh (Acting Vice Chancellor) as per NEHU Statute, by his baseless statements.
