The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed its concern over the failure by political leaders from the State to go to Delhi to plead for the cause of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“Till now, no politician has gone to Delhi to demand for the rights of the students. Perhaps, they are least bothered about NEHU as their sons and daughters are studying outside the State,” KSU general secretary Donald Thabah said today.
He also said that almost all of the 19 students who are on hunger strike have been hospitalised and came back to continue the fast, Thabah said that their physical condition has deteriorated and their studies affected.
“Just because the hunger strike occurred during winter when festivals of all kinds are being held, the politicians have no time to go to Delhi as they have to attend those festivals,” the KSU general secretary said.
“I want to ask the politicians, ministers and MPs whether they are satisfied with just writing letters to the Central government or by speaking over phones, or by visiting the protesting students. What is the problem for all MLAs to go to Delhi to raise this issue when you all are flying to Delhi from time to time in four seasons?” Thabah asked.
Stating that the hunger strike by students of NEHU is not for their own benefits, Thabah said the agitation was for the interest of future students of the university, students of affiliated colleges and employees of the university.
“We will not keep quiet. If our political leaders cannot convince the Education Ministry to resolve the issues of NEHU by removing vice chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla, we will be compelled to resort to other steps to make the State government and Centre understand about the gravity of the situation,” the KSU general secretary said.
