The election campaign for the KHADC and JHADC polls have taken a worrying turn, focusing on intimidation tactics rather than addressing pressing issues.
The fear of becoming a minority, job insecurity due to “outsiders,” and the erosion of indigenous people’s rights are all being exploited.
Meanwhile, the environmental degradation of Meghalaya is being ignored.
All the candidates who campaigned this time none of them talked about the environment or its degradation.
When we look around, we see with our own eyes the destruction of nature. The forests have been destroyed especially in the areas where the young trees are cut down for charcoal.
Around Khasi and Jaintia Hills we see this trees are being burnt for charcoal despite the government’s warning to do this kind of environmentally destructive activity.
According to records available there are 1855 limestone and stone quarries and coal mines in the state.
Out of these, only 155 have obtained the necessary licenses to operate, while the remaining are functioning without proper authorization, essentially operating as they see fit.
For many years now, governments around the world have been talking about climate change.
Shillong which was known for its mild climate, last summer saw the temperature rose to 27-28 degrees Celsius and sometimes to 29 degrees Celsius. This should have shocked us to change our irresponsible behavior.
Surprisingly, the District Councils have not done anything despite being entrusted with the task to look after the forests, water bodies and to enforce laws to rein in those who take the law into their own hands.
It’s imperative that the state’s leaders prioritize environmental issues and take concrete steps to mitigate the damage. The future of Meghalaya’s natural resources and the well-being of its citizens depend on it.
The Way Forward
Prioritize Environmental Issues: State leaders must address environmental concerns and take concrete steps to mitigate damage.
Enforce Laws and Regulations: District Councils must enforce laws and protect the environment.
Promote Sustainable Practices: Encourage sustainable practices, such as reforestation and eco-friendly mining methods.
Raise Awareness: Educate citizens about the importance of environmental protection and the consequences of neglecting it.
