The Department of Economics, Commerce and Management at Martin Luther Christian University organised its first national conference on “The Rise of Digitization in Business/Organizations – a Boon or a Bane”, which concluded today.
The two-day event, held online and offline, was held as part of the university’s continued celebration and commemoration of the 75th year of independence of our country and 50th year statehood of Meghalaya.
Over the two day, insights, perspectives and reservations on the theme were put forth and discussed by the speakers and paper presenters.
The inaugural day saw presentations from keynote speakers and guest speakers such as Prof S Victor Anandkumar of Pondicherri University, who spoke on the application of artificial intelligence in marketing and provided an analysis on the risk and rewards of digitisation in business and organisations.
Assistant Prof Wandinecia Tariang, of North-Eastern Hill University, spoke about digitisation and its impact on the economy. Tariang discussed the digital revolution that started in 1960 with the introduction of the PC and the internet. She also pointed out that intense digitisation has changed the way we live, work and relate to one another and it has also changed human development itself.
Sunildro LS Akoijam, Assistant Professor at NEHU’s Tura campus, elaborated on the stages of digitisation and stressed that it is becoming crucial for organisations to survive, remain relevant and to win competitive advantage.
Gavin Shullai, programme manager at 1917iTeams, shared about how digitisation in agriculture has created new possibilities. He cited a few examples, such as the use of drones and cameras that can capture areas suitable for plantation, measure PH levels, humidity, soil nutrients, deploy fertilizers and organic manure.
