Khliehriat, Jan 29: Narcotic drugs worth in excess of Rs 9.10 crore were incinerated in the industrial furnace of Star Cement at Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills.
The scientific disposal of the illegal drugs was carried out by the District Drug Disposal Committee of seven districts (East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills).
Inspector General of Police (CID), Meghalaya Aditya Goenka told reporters that cannabis made up the largest share of the drugs that were incinerated, with 296.79kg worth approximately Rs 6.97 crore destroyed. Yaba tablets (8.721kg) worth Rs 1.48 crore. Heroin (183g) worth Rs 34.83 lakh and codeine-based cough syrups (2,793 bottles) worth Rs 27.93 lakh made up the rest, apart from Rs 2.13 of what was labelled by the police as R-7 tablets.
The disposed drugs were seized in 58 cases across seven districts through sustained enforcement actions by the police.
“Every gram of narcotics destroyed is not merely the disposal of contrabands but a step towards protecting vulnerable individuals from the harmful effects of drug abuse,” Goenka said.
This action was undertaken as part of the broader vision of Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM). He highlighted that the fight against drugs is not limited to reducing supply through enforcement measures alone but also focuses on rehabilitation, awareness and prevention to ensure long-term impact.
