There seems to be no respite for many people in the Tura Bazaar area, after some criminal elements forced themselves into houses and tried to extort money from the occupants.
The incident, according to sources, took place a few days ago in the Fancy Valley locality of the town when more than six criminals entered houses to terrorise the occupants.
While some surprised occupants gave into the demands of the criminals, many refused to comply and were threatened with dire consequences.
“We were really surprised that they had the gall to come into our bedrooms and kitchen to demand money from us. This incident has not only shocked us to the core but also put fear into our lives for the safety of our families,” said one resident on condition of anonymity.
Many residents are used to extortionists come into their shops and demand money from them, but having this group march into their homes was unacceptable. While many chose to keep silent on the intrusion, others informed police.
“An investigation into the matter is currently being taken up but with people not willing to cooperate, the case has not made much headway. One officer staying there has been tasked with speaking to the residents for information on the incident. The person who informed us has not come forward to give more details,” said a visibly frustrated Superintendent of Police, MGR Kumar.
The residents, for now, have promised to be more vigilant and will inform police if the act is repeated.
