The municipal organic market cum office and dorbar hall of the Lumshatsngi Kench’s Trace dorbar shnong was inaugurated today by South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai.
The market was sanctioned at the cost of Rs 4.41 crore under the 13th finance commission 2014-2015.
Farmers from Lawsohtun known for its organic vegetables will now be able to sell their produce in the market.
“It is a known fact that many from Shillong city especially those not in good health condition and pregnant mothers use to come and buy fresh organic vegetables from the organic farm at Lawsohtun and this is the reason the urban and municipal gave this suggestion to use the term organic for the market,” Shullai said.
He said shopkeepers who had to sell their wares along the roadside, have faced hardships in the past and experienced numerous untoward incidents like accidents and fire and are also left at the mercy of unpredictable weather conditions.
Shullai urged shopkeepers to maintain the market and keep it clean and hygienic like their own kitchen and not turn it into a den of anti-social elements.
He further expressed happiness that the dorbar shnong now has their own dorbar hall, unlike all these years when they had to rent halls to conduct the various meetings and other functions.
