Leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, was moved to tears today as he considered the lack of unity among the major indigenous tribes of Meghalaya.
“The problem in Meghalaya is that we elected representatives, who belong to different political parties, have not been able to unite our three major tribes,” Dr Sangma said.
The Garo community have given Meghalaya the bulk of the state’s Chief Ministers over the years despite Garo Hills returning fewer MLAs.
This in turn leads to whispering campaigns when the CM is a Garo, or even when he (and all the CMs have been men) is a Khasi.
“Meghalaya will strive and prosper when we unite and act as citizens of the state. Not only by confining our thinking within the community to which we belong. We have to come together – Garo, Khasi, Jaiñtia together,” the leader of the opposition said. “Therefore, as we proceed closer to 2023 I would like to only tell people to be responsible in exercising your right to franchise.”
