Former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma who is currently in New Delhi is likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi tomorrow to discuss the internal frictions in the party in Meghalaya.
Dr. Sangma who is currently the leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly has been called to Delhi amid reports of him joining the Trinamool Congress.
Sonia is likely to offer a patch up formula to address the grievances of Dr. Sangma.
Dr. Sangma is said to be upset over the failure by the Congress high command to keep him in the loop while recently choosing Shillong MP Vincent H. Pala as the State party president.
The move to call Dr. Sangma to Delhi was made by the Congress high command to stop him from leaving the party after the exit of former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro and former All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev who have now joined the Trinamool Congress.
Dr. Sangma has a few days back rubbished the possibility of joining the Trinamool Congress.
Dr. Sangma along with all MLAs from Garo Hills had skipped two party meetings in the recent past including the one where Pala took over as party chief.
In a sign of a patch up, Dr. Sangma yesterday attended the meeting of the election committee of the party where Pala was also present. The two leaders decided to work together for the victory of the party in the by-elections to Mawryngkneng, Mawphlang and Rajabala scheduled on October 30.
Recently, Dr. Sangma had said that he would press for “course correction” within the party.
The former chief minister has a strong grip over Garo Hills and if he chose to leave the Congress, the party would have difficulty in retaining its base in the region in the 2023 Assembly polls.
Presently, the Congress has 17 members in the 60-member Assembly. Three of them are from the immediate family of Dr. Sangma and include his wife Dikkanchi Shira, daughter Miani Shira and brother Zenith Sangma.
