Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today tried to lay the blame for shortcomings of the border deal with Assam at the foot of his predecessor, Dr Mukul Sangma.
Conrad and his government have taken all the credit for the agreement, that is until fierce opposition emerged to aspects of it, with residents of several villages furious at having their land handed over to Assam.
Mukul, the leader of the opposition, has tried to make political capital out of this anger by attacking the government over the deal but today Conrad tried to turn the tables.
The CM said that much of the groundwork for the agreement was done during Mukul’s previous stint in charge of the state.
Conrad said that his government has only acted on the basis of a report prepared by Mukul’s government in 2011.
“Therefore, if he is today questioning the resolution and solution and why certain villages have been left out, he should ask himself why such villages are not included,” Conrad said, adding that, perhaps if the ex-CM had visited all these villages in 2011, they would not be going to Assam in 2022.
