Shillong, Nov 22: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has reiterated its demand that the state governments of Meghalaya and Assam initiate actions for a transparent, independent investigation into the Mukroh firing incident.
On the third anniversary of the incident, the HYC said both states should make the findings public with no further delay. It demanded prosecution against persons responsible for the killings and to ensure accountability and sustained efforts for peaceful resolution to the boundary dispute.
Mukroh was the site of a massacre on November 22, 2022 when Assam police crossed the border and shot dead five villagers and one of their own forest guards after a confrontation with locals.
“Although both the Assam and Meghalaya governments have agreed to request an independent judicial inquiry into the Mukroh incident by involving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the results of such an investigation have not been satisfactory as the process is still under investigation even after 3 years of the incident,” HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said.
Demanding closure and justice for the victims and their families, the HYC said that the incident was a senseless act of violence and remains an open wound in the conscience of our community.
