The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today said the Mukroh firing incident is not an ethnic issue but of border dispute in which the respective State governments are duty bound to solve.
Leaders of the two student bodies met in Tripura to hold a joint meeting on the incident during the sidelines of the North East Students Organisation (NESO) conference.
The union leaders said that though Meghalaya and Assam governments have been engaging in border talks, both should take the confidence of the people living on both sides of the border areas before arriving at any final decisions.
They also suggested that proper security should be given to the border areas to provide the people with a sense of security. “Both the state governments should also look into this very important aspect in providing security as there is an apprehension and a sense of insecurity amongst some of the residents residing in Guwahati and different parts of Assam and Shillong and different parts of Meghalaya,” the leaders said in a joint statement.
The joint meeting was attended by KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar, AASU president Dipankar Kr Nath, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa and NESO secretary general Sinam Prakash Singh.
