A man suspected of attempting to mug another person of cash that had just been withdrawn from a bank was arrested by police today afternoon in Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi.
Two motorbike-riding robbers accosted the man, Sahil Jaman Passah, who was on his way home after withdrawing money from the State Bank of India branch in Amjok, Byrnihat. The muggers tried to snatch Passah’s bag but fled from the spot when the victim resisted.
Passah did not stop there, however, and pursued the would-be thieves with the help of a friend. They tracked the motorbike to 15th Mile where one suspect was detained by locals while the other managed to flee with help of conspirators on another motorbike.
The suspect who was detained was then handed over to Byrnihat police and the motorbike (AS 13 M 9065) he was riding was seized.
Secretary of the local Amjok Dorbar Shnong, Rajesh Lapang, told reporters that this was not the first case of its kind.
In an earlier daylight robbery, which was unfortunately successful, another victim was robbed of Rs 2 lakh in cash.
The village authorities have asked the police to take a serious note of such incidents and to deploy more personnel in Amjok, which is the location of several bank branches.
