he Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is planning on making Umiam Lake an even bigger draw for tourists in future.
A planned floating restaurant is already in the process of being constructed, with a firm from Kolkata implementing the project, MTDC chairman Saleng Sangma said today, and will likely be complete in a few months time.
Adventure sports, such as parasailing and jet skis, are also expected to be seen on the reservoir to draw in more local and outside tourists. The state government approved a proposal to introduce these two activities to Umiam Lake a few days ago.
A few firms to operate the services at Umiam Lake have already been identified by the government and, if things work out, they may start soon," said Sangma.
Meanwhile, the government is also examining the possible introduction of cable cars across the lake but wants to be 100 percent sure of their safety before giving the go-ahead. If approved, a cable car service would run from the convention centre to an island on the lake. This would be even better than the cable car ride across the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, Sangma said, as Umiam is "much more beautiful" than the Brahmaputra, he added.
