Shillong, Mar 28: The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) inaugurated the second phase of its training programme for inmates of the District Prison & Correctional Home, Shillong.
The programme aims to work towards advancing a transformative vision of correctional reform, viewing correctional homes as institutions of rehabilitation, renewal, and reintegration.
Building on the success of the first phase, which introduced training in farming, candle-making, and mura production, the second phase expands the scope bringin on board training partners like CIT, Bethany Society, and Deiphi Fashion Academy to strengthen the programme’s scope and delivery.
At the inaugural function held today, products made by inmates were showcased, and dignitaries were presented with these as a gesture of gratitude and achievement.
Addressing the inmates, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta Mary Kurbah commended their discipline and encouraged them to view the initiative as a turning point, utilizing their time constructively and embracing change with hope and determination. “Correctional homes must stand true to their name,” she noted.
MSSDS Executive Director Jagdish Chelani stated that the initiative resulted from collective deliberation among stakeholders, united by the belief that correctional systems must enable individuals to return to society as productive and empowered citizens.
Notably, 40 inmates have opened bank accounts and are earning through skill-based production activities, building savings and preparing for life beyond incarceration.
Ricky Rynthei of Bethany Society highlighted the transformative power of access to education and skills, citing instances of inmates pursuing multiple degrees and earning accolades.
Superintendent of Shillong District Prison James Marbaniang, Inspector General of Prisons & Correctional Services Z. J. Sangma and officials attended the inaugural function.
