Shillong, Nov 27: The Meghalaya People’s Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has welcomed the historic UN General Assembly resolution proclaiming the International Day of the world’s Indigenous Women and Girls to be commemorated every September 5.
“This decision reflects the shared understanding that symbolic and practical actions work together to advance the rights and well-being of indigenous women as guaranteed under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. By establishing this International Day, observance alone does not immediately transform living conditions but the day can play a vital role to recognize the challenges faced by indigenous women and girls in mobilizing long–term political attention” said MPHRC.
It council on its 29th anniversary has urged the government and indigenous stakeholders to recognise the role played by many local indigenous women who have not only dedicate their lives in contributing to preserving rich indigenous identity of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo community but many women have become the bearers of identity and protector of land, territories and natural resources from external threats.
MPHRC Chairman Dino DG Dympep said the declaration further elevates an immediate attention to the rights and priorities of indigenous peoples and amplifies issues that require sustained visibility and action through the year.
