Nongpoh, Nov 26: The Ri Bhoi district police have won accolades from all quarters for their intensive round-the-clock checking to ensure road safety along the National Highway.
This time the district police was patted in the back by Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon, who was stopped at Byrnihat while returning to the State from New Delhi, during a night checking led by Senior Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Sing Rathore.
The MP got down from his vehicle to commend the police officers.
Syngkon emphasised that the law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of whether they are VIPs or ordinary citizens.
Speaking to reporters, he expressed hope that similar drives initiated by the Ri Bhoi Police would be implemented across all districts of the state to ensure that people remain responsible while driving and to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
As a public representative, he said, it is his firm belief that law enforcement authorities must not show favoritism to anyone—whether VIPs or common citizens—and that those who violate the law must face appropriate legal action. Laws are designed to be applied uniformly, he added.
The checking last night was carried out in collaboration with members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Lum Nongthymmai, Byrnihat.
Meanwhile, a member of the VDP Erimus Lamin said cooperation between the police and VDPs is crucial, especially considering that many road accidents are caused by drunken driving. Such police initiatives, he said, will greatly help in ensuring safety along the highway.
